CORRUPTING THE YOUNG MIND

A child's performance in school means alot to the parents. That's the reason why bad comments such as lack of concentration in class and even being too playful in school that are made by their teachers get the parents worried about their children especially when the children end up getting bad grades. These are some of the reasons parents decide to hire private tutors for their children which of course it is not a bad idea. However the question is,as a parent do you make inquiries from your child about what happens during the learning sessions?

Some of these private tutors are not who you think they are. Some of them show up at your doorstep well dressed and really smiling at you to impress you. Even though some approach you with good intentions but later on things may take a different turn from good to bad. Without looking at a specific age bracket but just across from the nursery level to high school level, this group of learners are at a high risk of being sexually harassed by their tutors.

Siting an example from a movie I watched "Corrupting the young mind", exactly where my topic came from. The little girl in the movie always came last in her class with very bad grades and her mother, who was not always at home leaving her under the care of her aunt, decided to seek help from a private tutor during the holiday. She found a male tutor for her daughter and she thought that everything will be fine with her daughter. Little did she know that she had just signed a death sentence for her.

Things turned from bad to worse when the tutor started harassing the girl sexually and even teaching her and showing her things that are above her age. She decided to approach her mother about it but she did not listen to her. Everyone thought that she did not just want to study. You can find out more from the movie and see how things ended.

Some of these children are always tormented and they sometimes run away whenever they see their tutors approaching them. Some of them suffer physically, emotionally or even mentally. Unfortunately, some of them lack someone to talk to and even explain whatever it is they are going through because some parents may think that they don't want to study.

As we all know, such actions have consequences. Some of the effects include early pregnancy for the older learners, trauma and depression, contracting STDs and HIV and AIDS and even death. In this case, death comes about when the victim thinks that he or she is abandoned by their loved ones and is left to deal with the situation, there after they may think of committing suicide.

This goes to the parents, before you hire any tutor for your child ensure you do a background check to ensure the safety of your child during his or her studies. Secondly, spare sometime to talk to your child after the session to know what she learnt and last but not least, take time to listen to your child whenever they request for your attention. Kindly do this to be sure that your child is safe before it's too late.

  1. You've really picked a topic which most parents neglect go look into...a background check up and ensuring that another adult is around for supervision will surely help the child...keep up👏

  2. Thanks for this piece and it's true that most parents usually assume until they realise that 'Majuto ni mjukuu...na safari hii kafariki!'
